Elevating Legal Expertise: SRMO lawyers’ Post-graduate Legal Education

SRMO is proud of its lawyers’ commitment to continuous improvement, as evidenced by their pursuit of post-law degrees. This dedication enhances their technical skills, knowledge, and professional networks, enabling SRMO to provide exceptional legal services.

Cesar P. Manalaysay. Manalaysay, a renowned legal scholar, completed his master of laws degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1976. Manalaysay wanted to experience how law is taught in another jurisdiction especially one which prides itself on the rule of law. He also enjoyed the informality of class room decorum. Students just wore jeans, t-shirts, and warmers. There was more free willing discussion between professors and students than in his Philippine law school. Manalaysay’s post-graduate degree affected his legal practice profoundly. Their exams were mostly open books because in actual law practice, a lawyer can refer to law books anyway. They were given a multitude of facts which were mostly irrelevant. LLM further honed his skills to zero in on what is relevant, what is crucial to apply the proper law or provision. At present, Manalaysay’s legal acumen is very evident in his usual out-of-the-box legal solutions to clients’ problems.

Victor N. Alimurung. Alimurung, a distinguished and prominent lawyer, took his master of laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1970. Alimurung’s exposure to international legal practice and research enabled him to tackle complex legal challenges through a combination of innovative and practical legal solutions.

Nicanor N. Padilla. Taking the road less traveled by lawyers, Padilla pursued master’s in business administration degree from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University in 1995. Padilla studied a wide range of business disciplines, including finance, marketing, strategy, operations, and leadership. His in-depth knowledge of business and management enabled him to effectively communicate with businessmen and entrepreneurs, allowing him to solve their legal issues.

Elita Joy P. Quicho. Quicho, an esteemed lawyer and educator, finished her master of laws with specialization in law and technology from the University of California, Berkeley in 2018. Quicho said her LLM has been instrumental in enhancing her legal practice in several key ways. Her degree has equipped her with a deep understanding of the law and its multifaceted interaction with technology. This specialized knowledge allows her to provide more comprehensive and strategic advice to her corporate clients, particularly in areas such as data privacy, fin-tech, and structuring of tech start-ups. In addition, Quicho’s connections with faculty, fellow students, and industry professionals have provided her with valuable insights, mentorship, and potential collaborations.

Ma. Corazon D. Eleazar. Eleazar, an admired tax practitioner, chose to widen her knowledge in her field of practice through a master of laws in international tax from the University of Michigan which she completed in 2014. Eleazar pursued post-graduate studies for professional and personal reasons. Professionally, she studied to gain in-depth knowledge of international tax law, and on a personal level, to experience living abroad. Eleazar remarked that it was a great privilege to learn from professors who are internationally recognized as experts in their fields, but the best part of the whole experience is meeting people from all over the world. Up to present, she is still in touch with some of the friends she met during her time in Michigan.

Frances Grace Allyana Orbeta-Nolasco. Orbeta-Nolasco, a top-notch lawyer, finished her European master’s in law and economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam (Netherlands), Hamburg University (Germany), and Aix-Marseille University (France) 2021. Nolasco-Orbeta decided to pursue the European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) program to integrate economic analysis with her legal practice and broaden her perspective, while immersing herself in different cultures and gaining international experience. She enjoyed moving from Germany to the Netherlands and then to France for the EMLE program, with newfound friends.

SRMO actively encourages its lawyers to pursue post-graduate studies which allows them to enhance their legal expertise in areas such as corporate law, tax law, international law, and fin-tech. This reflects SRMO’s commitment to professional development, innovation, and client service which benefits both the firm and its lawyers, as it fosters a culture of excellence and positions the firm as a leader in the legal industry.
